The Essential Block Plane: How To Choose And Use Woodworking’s Most Popular Trimmer
It’s no secret that I love hand planes and own way too many of them–about 250 at last count. Many of them perform highly specialized tasks and don’t see use very often. But there’s one type of plane that’s a stand-out exception: the block plane. In fact, when I’m asked by beginning woodworkers what plane they should start out with, that’s the one that always tops the list.
Moisture Meters and Why You Use Them
Structurally sound and beautiful in appearance, wood is the ideal raw material. Woodworkers know that moisture content is the single most important factor affecting the quality of their project. To ensure quality, from the mill and dry kiln to the finished project, moisture meters help minimize defects such as shrinkage, cracks, and splits. Years of experience, high-tech tools, controls and premium grade lumber cannot make a difference if moisture content goes unchecked.

Its good.
Very good when you need a smaller planer, but its a little bit bigger than I thought. I have one that is just 4 inch long that I bought cheap 25 years ago, but still going strong. This one is new and I hope it will fit in between...

Planes.
After much reading about block planes, I decided to purchase these two planes (standard block and low-angle). One of the planes was just about perfect and was flattened in a matter of minutes. The other required about 2 hours of serious work to bring the sole to a true flat condition. These planes feel nice in the hand. I wish the knobs were made of brass and not steel. The blade adjustment is very stiff--perhaps this will loosen up as time goes on. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase. The planes cut well after sharpening and I think they will satisfy my needs as an intermediate level woodworker.

Simply great!
This kit is simply fantastic.Very good quality. I have the classic black "Stanley plane 91/2 ", but this is beyond. Excellent companion for work, specially the low angle, is just heaven. Perfect weight and fitting in the palm of your hand. Very satisfied. Love it!
