Great chisels
After having Pfeil butt chisels put on backorder for months, I 'settled' for these. Boy, was that a good move! Yes, these chisels need to be lapped and sharpened, but once that is done, they are a great chisel. Really hold and edge. Fit my hands very well. Glad I made the purchase.

Who needs flat chisel backs?
The chisels look great and arrived on time. But I’m just now getting around to sharpening them and I’ve started with the backs, and they are only slightly better then a mill file flatness out of the box. Additionally, at least the 3/4 is not square to the sides.

Great chisels
I bought these a year or so ago because the other brand was not in stock and back ordered several times. I have been VERY pleased with these. They required flattening an sharpening but once done, they have been terrific. Really glad I bought them. As a side note... I have purchased other Woodriver items and always well satisfied with them.

Very good butt chisels
The butt chisels flattened and honed razor sharp and are great for completing dovetails. I had planned on getting another brand but because that brand was continually back ordered, I settled for these. However, the Woodriver set has proven to be excellent for my purposes and are considerably less expensive than the other brand.

nice
If not top shelf then a very good second shelf. With my set, the back of the tools arrived quite flat and the bevels ready for honing. I think I spent 45 minutes getting the entire set of four bench ready. They so far are keeping an edge but time will see how they anneal. I only occasionally use a butt chisel so these seem to be perfect.

Nice set
I bought this set recently and I am happy with them. In less than an hour I had all of them flat on the back and razor sharp. The only fault in mine is the 1" chisel came with a small nick in the bevel. I think it will sharpen out with no problem. The chisels are working fine for me.

great palm chisels
These seem to go on sale with frequency. While on sale these are a great set of palm chisel. There was minimal work required to lap the bottoms on all four chisel and the levels were sharpened up on oil stones with great efficiency. Hair popping sharp and seem to hold rather well. Great buy with only some work needed on my set.

A Good Set of Chisels
These chisels are fairly sharp right out of the box, and a few minutes of honing has them ready and raring to go. I like the size, they are shorter than most chisels, and despite having big hands, I like the way they fit closely in my hand. So far, I have no complaints.

Nice Looking but Not Good
The chisels look nice but I had a very hard time faltening the backs. I actually gave up on the 3/4" and 1" chisels. After almost 1/2 an hour on the coarse diamond stones, I was able to get less than 1/4" back from the edge flat.

I would buy this product again
Got the set for a "great price", needed a little work to bring them to a "flat" back and to sharpen them to razor quality, surprisingly the edge "last" very good, easy to handle where a full size chisel is a bit awkward. Comes in a good looking and strong wooden case. I am very happy with this set.

Fits my hand like a glove
This is truly a fantastic tool. The way that it fits in my hand is, in my opinion, as perfect as I could hope for. As cheesy as this sounds, it is still true: the tool feels like an extension of my arm. It isn't so long that it becomes flimsy at the business end, and the way the handle fits snuggly in the palm of my hand, I feel a sense of complete control over the chisel. A very fine tool for the price, indeed.

Not the best ones they sell by any means
They are nice but much smaller then I thought they would be, I am not that big but they seem small for my hands. Seem like an ok product at the sale flyer price.

Hard to ask for more
I have other good chisels, but since I cut a lot of dovetails, my preference is to use something that is easy to balance, holds an edge and is easy to sharpen. A tall order I know - but these have delivered just that. I'm able to hold these chisels like a pencil for dovetailing without hand fatigue. In sharpening,(Paul Sellers method) I was surprised to find that getting the burr was quick, but yet they hold an edge much longer than expected.

Wood River - A good value for the price
I did a full review of these chisels that you can find on my blog just look up vallis guitars - Long story short these are really good chisels for the money, and with a little bit of work they are as good as more expensive chisels with surprisingly nicer fit and finish.

Good chisel set for price
First time to use these chisels I made a book shelf with handmade dovetails and the chisels worked great. The wood I used was knotted cedar. When I finished my project the chisels where still very sharp and need little to no maintenance. The biggest complaint I had with the set was that the two larger chisels were VERY dull with very little edge. I spent hours up on hours working to get them flat and then razor sharp.

Impressive little set!
I didn't expect anything more out of these chisels than a decent set of chisels for the price. When I unboxed them, the first thing that I noticed was that they came in a cheap little finger jointed wooden box. The wood was not the greatest quality, and was covered in a very thick coating of semi-gloss varnish. When I opened the box up however, I found a very nice set of four chisels. I was impressed with the overall quality of the wood, steel, and ferrules used in these tools! Unlike other chisels that I have used that have a round "dowel-shaped" handle that drops off into the shaft of the steel blade, the handles on these chisels are contoured to the ferrules, which are contoured to the shaft of the blade. This gives a very comfortable feel when the tool is in my hands. The wood is high quality and very smooth, with a very light finish. I intended on spending some time tuning the chisels up, but decided to use them fresh out of the box so I could see how usable they were fresh out of the box. Although I was impressed with how sharp these chisels were from the get-go, they could still benefit from a couple of minutes of work on the oil stones. Still, if you do not intend on doing very fine carving, or if you are working with a soft wood such as pine, these will work just fine without any further work needed. After spending some time with these chisels "perfecting" them on the oil stones, I was even more impressed! They were fairly flat and required very little work getting them 100%. The blades did take some time sharpening the bevel and flat sides to a mirror finish, but that is actually a good thing (indicates a high strength steel which will hold a sharp edge longer). All in all, I spent about an hour and a half on the set polishing them to razor sharpness. Since tuning them up, I have worked with several hardwoods from oak, to hickory, to purple heart (a wood that I normally had to chisel with a hydraulic jackhammer!), and they are still sharp enough to shave hairs off of my forearm. All in all, if you plan on buying a set of chisels and using them out of the box for softer woods, these will work out great! If you plan on getting a nice set of chisels and tuning them to perfection, you will not be disappointed here either. If you need a chisel to dig oak or other hardwoods right out of the box with no prep work, and money is no object, you may be interested in a more expensive set. All in all, this set of chisels that I thought would be "a nice set, for the money" have turned out to be simply "a nice set".

Very nice , work great !
So far keeps a good edge. Fit great it the hands
-
nice set
I like these chisels and have used them for smaller work that I have. My one complaint and really I am not really complaining as I feel tuning up a tool is just part of owning good tools and making them work for you is that these did require a good couple of hours flattening the back and sharpening to get the a point that I like.

WoodRiver does it again
WoodRiver has displayed some pretty good workmanship and these chisels are no exception. Time will tell how they hold an edge
-
nice chisels
I did not use Woodcraft sharpening service yet these chisels were useful right out of the box. The handles fit well into the ferrules so there is no lip to blister or cut your hand. The case is well made and perfectly suited to this set. And lastly the bubinga handles are good looking and comfortable in my hand.

wood river butts
Handy to have a smaller chisel for in close work. Would be nice if the beveled edges were thinner, but for that price I can grind them down. Bought them at 50% off - would not have bought them at full price.

The backs need a lot of work to flatten them but when done, work well.

Great bargain
Great for big and small projects.

good buy
I bought two sets of these. I have wanted a set but a friends birthday was coming up so I bought two sets while they were on sale. I have not even sharpened mine yet but did his before I gave them to him. It took quite a bit of work to get the backs flat but after they were flat the sharpening went quick. He has used them a couple of times while doing some home remodeling as says they work great, and hold an edge good. Other then the time required to flatten the back, if it had gone faster my set would have been done also, I can't think of anything bad to say about them.

Quality at a great sale price!
This is a good-looking set of chisels. They are well made and nicely finished. I could have used them by just putting on a secondary bevel; the backs were pretty flat and the bevels were ground properly. I lapped the backs anyway and re-ground the bevels just to be sure they were true and square (they were). They have a good hand- fit and heft for butt chisels. I have nothing bad to say about this set.

WoodRiver is good quality.
Bought this for my woodworking projects. All the smaller chisels were perfectly flat in the back, so didn't need any work except final honing. The one inch was slightly rounded on the back side of the cutting edge, it needed some work on a 320 diamond stone to get it completely flat. Took about 5 minutes of work, final honing and was perfect. The handles are all outstanding and beautiful. The blade holds its edge. In general I am well satisfied with this product and I am not reclutant to buy WoodRiver in the future.

Love them but need a bit of work
I picked these up in the store, and looked them over before I purchased. Each chisel had a nice finish and all were very consistent in fit shape. It was obvious that some honing would be needed on the edge, but the backs appeared to be flat. The box also looked pretty good and solid. After I got them home, I realized that the back of each one needed some work. The worst was the 1 inch chisel that had a 1/32 bow in the length of the blade. After getting them flattened, they sharpened up very nicely. I recently got an 8000 grit stone to polish the edges, and they will all shave hair. The steel appears to be very good quality. Now that they have been tuned, I am very happy with the way that they look and feel in my larger hands. I expect these to be life-long friends. Perfect time to get these is now while they are on sale.

Fantastic value!
I'd been scoping these chisels for a while, the regular price is less than half the price of the next expensive set. When these beauties go on sale, they shouldn't be passed up. As mentioned, they need an initial honing. After introducing the chisels to my worksharp, I took them to some maple, pine and even a bit of grenadillo. They pare wonderfully, and do excatly what a chisel is expected to do. The only reason I give these four stars is because I did have an opportunity to play with some Pfeil chisels, there is a marked difference if you have the money and need. If you're expanding your hand tools, these are a great value even at regular price.

Wood River 4 Piece Butt Chisel set
excellent set for the price, got them on sale

Outstanding
I am truly impressed with this set of chisels. They are beautiful! The handles are all quality grade Bubinga. The shafts were all polished, straight, beautiful with good clean lines. They had plenty of meat without being to thick but not to thin either. I think they were just right! The side bevels were cut cleanly but a little to high for my taste. But that is easily fixed if one was so inclined. They fit great in the hand. They do not come sharp. They all had a great initial grind which was uniform, square and clean. The backs were mostly flat. A true beauty to hold and use in the hand. If you get them, once you get them honed up, you will love them. I bought them for my son as his first set of chisels. I had them engrave his name in the hand. Customer Service was awesome and the names came out uniform on each chisel. Truly awesome!! Thank you Woodcraft! Nate
