Comes out BEAUTIFULLY, but you must follow the directions.
I have Behlen (now Mohawk) Stringed Instrument Lacquer on several guitars and it has come out beautifully every time. It's a lot of work, and it's very time consuming, but IMHO the finish is nicer than a wipe-on poly finish. You MUST follow the directions - make sure it's at least 65 degrees where you're spraying, and make sure the humidity that day is under about 70 percent or so. And you must use their Vinyl Sealer first - two coats of Vinyl Sealer, one hour apart, followed by no more than 4 coats per day of the Stringed Instrument Lacquer, one hour apart. Let it dry overnight and then apply 4 coats one hour apart on a second day, and at least 2 coats one hour apart on the third day. Then let it cure for at least a week before final sanding (800 grit through to 2000 using their Finish Rub) and buffing using their Buffer's polish.

Never hardened, nasty stuff
I have used the quarts of mohawk instrument lacquer on my custom guitars many times with great success. However, my compressor was recently out of commission so I dropped by my local woodcraft and picked up a can to try out. It seemed to go on ok, but it never hardened. Iir started really gummy and when wet sanding it balled and rolled up, causing me to have to strip and start over. Not sure what the deal is but it just doesn't cut it. Also, in this day and age, I would live to see better spray tips like some other brands use, but that doesn't factor in to my star rating.
