The Travel Mugs Turning Project
This project was my first experience in turning these Travel Mugs offered in a kit by Woodcraft. This is a relatively new kit with a screw top lid. In our online ad, it states, “Create a custom travel mug using your favorite wood or mixed media to produce a one-of-a-kind dramatic effect. You can either turn the outer liner using a stave configuration or simply use solid wood blocks. Although this kit is for an experienced turner, you will find that the hollowing techniques are easy to execute, and the results are nothing short of amazing.
The Recipe Box – Part 4: Hinges, Assembly, Finish, Matching Pen & Final Touches
Part 4 of the Recipe Box concludes the series with a base and hinge assembly, finishing, followed by adding 3 detail components including turning a matching Bubinga Sedona Rollerball Pen.

Disappointed
Not as glossy as I had hoped.

mylands friction polish
I am very disappointed. For some reason I thought it would be very good. It is not a high build-up or very glossy finish. I find Hut the best so far. Next I'll make my own with shellac, denatured alcohol and boiled linseed oil, 1/3 of each. It's popular and the generally accepted high finish friction polish.

Nope
This is the second “friction finish“ I’ve tried, the other was Hut Crystal Coat. All I can say is, run away. I haven’t thrown it in the garbage yet, in the hope that I might find some use for it, but I haven’t found one yet. In this most recent attempt I was trying to get a durable, glossy finish on a conductor’s baton I had turned. Maybe Ebony just doesn’t like friction finish(?) It comes out initially very glossy, but it doesn’t last, does poorly on end grain and doesn’t take handling well. Then I stripped it bare again and reached for my Birchwood Casey Tru Oil, and in a few hours I had a glass-hard finish that was almost too glossy; I actually had to knock it down a little with 0000 steel wool followed by buffing compound to get it “satined” out a bit. Anyway, I’m done experimenting. It’s Tru Oil from now on.

Great Product on Wood Turning Projects
For lathe work I apply at about 1,000RPM after I put on a sanding sealer. Makes for a beautiful finish.
-
pen finish
Use to finish pens
-
It does just what they said it would.
Great for pens.

Mylands High Build Friction Wax
Don't let it build up on fingers. It will dry and crack shin. So wash hands after use

Mylands Polish Gvies 5 Star Finish
I make duck calls on my lathe and Mylands High Build Friction Polish makes a high level finish/sealant. Dries hand, mirror gloss and brings out the grain of the wood as good as it gets. However, you need a steady hand and watch for over doing it so it dries evenly.
-
nice finish
this product is great for wood turning projects, just takes a few coats to get a really lustrous sheen, add more coats to achieve a glosst smooth finish
-
I love this stuff!
I use Mylands HBF Polish on my spinning tops because it dries fast, looks great, and gives me a finished product when I take the top off the lathe.
-
A Fast and Fine Finish
This friction finish is easy to apply on the lathe and in my opinion works best at higher speeds where the friction helps to "burn in" the finish. It doesn't leave the project with a plastic appearance, but brings the natural beauty of the wood to a nice luster.
-
great product
apply many coats at high speeds
-
great stuff - but
If you try to apply multiple coats it will begin to streak. You can actually feel them. If they included proper instructions (even bad ones) this possibly could have been avoided. A single coat applied with a very smooth cloth is what I recommend.
-
need's more helpfull instructions.
Good for the master wood worker!
-
I have used this before - love it.
Used mostly for turnings
-
not bad, water resistant
I found it is best to apply thin, buff in with rag, then heat polish. The thinner the better. I found with a brush the finish is to thick and polishes with lines

High Build Friction Polish
No usage directions on container, but I rubbed the product into the wood, let dry 30 min. and then polished with a clean cotton cloth, and got a great shine, I added a second coat for good measure.

Beautiful Shine
This product allows me to finish a project in the time it would take me to set up for another finish. Leaving the project on the lathe to complete the finishing is WONDERFUL. I have used this on several bowls and even on a couple of pens. I have never been dissatisfied about the final effect on a project.
-
Great Finish
This product really brings out the beauty of the grain. It is dry before you remove the work from the machine.
-
Consistent and reliable... easy to use
I use the product on a lathe. It is easy to apply and the results are consistent, providing a beautiful sheen.
-
