Info on this walnut oil
Per Mike Mahoney it is processed by a proprietary process that prevents allergic reactions and prevents it from spoiling. It forms a nice finish and is reasonably easy to maintain.

Taste test
I would encourage anyone considering this walnut oil for wood finish to taste a little bit of it on the day it arrives, and know that fresh walnut oil has a rather bland flavor but pleasant aftertaste. If your oil leaves an unpleasant aftertaste it is going rancid. Rancidity worsens the oil's ability to harden. On the wood, it may look "dry" (not glossy) and may feel "dry" (not tacky) but it has simply been absorbed into the wood....and cut off from the light and oxygen that it needs to polymerize.

Mahoney vs mineral oil
I compared Mahoney's oil to butcher block oil on maple cutting boards that I made. Applied three coats, each separated by 24 hrs. Both produced indistinguishable amber color on the wood. After 3 weeks I clamped a white paper/ cloth/white paper sandwich between two Mahoney's treated boards for 24 hrs. The white paper absorbed a considerable amount of oil. In spite of Mfg claims, this stuff does not dry in a reasonable period of time.

GREAT natural finish!
Used on all wooden surfaces for bowls and other hand turned items. Absorbs well into wood....seems to be pretty fast drying over night!

A great product
I simply wipe it on, let it set over night and re-apply as needed. Leaves a fine satin finish on every wood I have used it on.

Mediocre Finish
Like most other oil finishes, this finish does indeed darken the color of the wood (amber). Unlike its advertisement, the product does NOT harden in 24 hours,(however, it does soak into the wood and appears dry). I let a bowl (kiln dried wood) rest suspended on tacks for a week at room temperature and the product was still not hardened. Proof: I set it on a paper towel for two days and it left an oily ring stain. I suspect like other natural vegetable oils, it will harden over time (like 6 months or a year) but hopefully will not become rancid like other vegetable type oils. In my opinion mineral oil would be comparable to this finish (without the ambering effect), however, mineral oil doesn't harden. Tung oil is probably a better choice.

Mahoney's Walnut oil
This is simply just the best product I have ever used. If you turn bowls or make butcher block tops or just own one & want to use it, this is THE product. NO hydrocarbons left to contaminate your food. Does not change wood color but does enhance the grain & hardens the wood. Once you try it you will wonder why you used anything else.

Good finish
4-1/2 stars (nothing is perfect). I used it for trivits because it is supposed to be food safe. It dries well, looks great and has a good finish.

would buy this product again
my mother gave me a large set of 30yr old steak knives with wooden handles. The blades were in good condition but the handles were really dry. Soaked them over night in the walnut oil, now they are as good as new.
