Buy a compressor gun
Disappointed disappointed dissapointed, sucks on laquer with 2.0 mm needle, smaller needle suggested was for another gun. Clip to keep hose on broke immediately. It’s not quality enough to come with that price and that’s not including the lack of bleed off issues. Air goes no matter what. So don’t think long about your next pass, you’ll dry fine finishes before you pass again. Spend more, or use a compressor gun. Utterly disappointed

Be aware of all of the issues.
Not a bad sprayer for thae price but not the best ever used. It looks deceptivly easy to use in the videos so be aware that it will take some time and practie to get good at using this sprayer. If I could go back and start over I would spend more to upgrade to at least a three stage turbine without constant bleed and the ability to use either a gravity fed or bottom fed spray gun. I all said and done the best I can give this sprayer is a three out of five.

Good for DIYer and small shops
Nice unit, especially for a novice user. Easy to use and short learning curve, but still good enough for high end results. Easy to use and clean. Press-fit air hose works fine, but lack of swivel connection makes maneuvering in tight spaces a little difficult. Also need to take care to have floor area underneath base unit perfectly clean because air intake on bottom sucks up dirt and foam filter allows little particles through and can end up in your finish. Still one of the best bangs for your buck and unless you need one for daily or weekly use, this one will suit most users. Just don't make the same mistake as some complainers due to using the wrong nozzle size.

I love my 5500 but...
As my fledgling cabinet shop grows so does my need for a quality finish. The Earlex5500 was my first spray set-up and while it did a commendable job on smaller projects and painted work, it just could not give me the smooth finish or speed that my work was demanding. I now use a FujiQ3 for my finish work and use the Earlex for all my stain and paint work. I am far from a "pro" but my experience thus far leaves me with the opinion that the Earlex just can't fully atomize the water-borne finishes we seem to be stuck with here in Kalifornia, and is not powerful enough to efficiently spray larger projects. If you don't do that though, this is a really nice rig and I think you will be pleased with its performance!!

Better than Apollo
Works better than my $900 Apollo ECO-5 and doesn't heat up nearly as bad (very bad feature of the ECO-5). The only issue is the fan pattern which is unique to Earlex, it has no separate fan width adjustment resulting in a spray that is far too wide when that pattern is selected wasting material.

Works great
The retention clip for the hose is very easily broken. Not sure why this item is so cheap. It is essentially useless after only a few uses. The machine I received had shorter handle rods than in the catalog pictures- rods that attach the machine to its handle? This means I have no clearance between the gun and the handle? Overall seems to work well with a little practice.

love it
Just used it yesterday to apply GF Antique Cherry water-base stain to a cherry trestle table top. The top is just too large to do by hand. The stain dries too fast and then streaks. With the Earlex I had a beautiful result. Had to thin the stain. Used a crisscross technique with my wife wiping off the excess. Came out perfect the first time. My wife said "That was a great purchase". End of story

takes a little practice
not as easy as it looks takes a little getting used to.

Right tool for the Job!
While working with a friend we used his Earlex system to finish a set of custom-made walnut cabinets. The finish we achieved was nothing short of remarkable. It was those results that caused me to purchase my own system. I can't wait to put mine to work. Great Product...Great results!

Great System for the $
So I have used this on all kinds of finishes. I spray mostly water borne/based finishes, but have used lacquer and shellac. I have also sprayed some oil but probably won't again more because I love water borne/based. It also sprays latex paint well. You do have to thin it a little but that was something I knew I was going to have to do. As for the air hose the problem is that it does not swivel at the gun. I fixed this by going to a friend who is a machinist and had her make me a swivel that fits the gun and the hose.

I will stick with an air compressor.
I bought the sprayer to finish guitars. It comes with a 2mm needle assembly and was supposed to include a 1.5 mm needle assembly, however, that was missing and was not sent later even though I told the customer rep about it. The only adjustment on the gun is the orientation of the fan-shaped spray pattern and the trigger travel. I am used to using a double action spray gun that I can control. This gun, with the 2mm needle assembly literally slings huge amounts of thinned lacquer at the guitar. Since I can't adjust the width of the spray pattern I won't be doing any sunbursts with it. I think I can still use it for staining the deck and painting the garage door.

very good spraying system
I've used many HVLP sprayer guns from various companies including porter cable, kobalt. Most sprayers working on compressor has problems on thick paint or latex finishes. And parts have a lot of hidden corners and holes, so it's very difficult to clean the sprayer up. Due to this reason, just spraying the paint thinner is not enough to clean up the remenant in the gun and it builds up in the corner and causes clogging later. However, this sprayer is really easy to clean. I don't see any corners that hard to reach and all parts have flat surfaces. Also it's very powerful that I could spray exterior latex paint easier than any other HVLP guns. Very good for the fine finishes too. One problem. When I hook up air hose to the gun, it comes out easily when the motor running, so it needs improvement to hold it tight.

great sprayer
This is a great sprayer. I got the same think at [@] for $80.00 less. It's the same sprayer.

Disappointed
I have a cabinet I want to spray paint, so after researching different HVLP sprayers I decided to go with the Earlex HV5500 because it seem like sprayer that could handle a variety of finishes for a reasonable price. I'm using General Finishes milk paint for my cabinet. They claim the paint can be spray straight from the can and maybe it can but not with HV5500. I really had to thin down the paint to get any thing out and what did come out was irregular and runny. The flat surface I'd sprayed the paint on had to be brushed out. I'm glad I didn't start a vertical surface. I have used high pressure sprayers in the past so it not like I never used a sprayer before. I will not try spraying paint with the HV5500 again. Should the HV5500 not be able to apply clear finishes to my satisfaction, then I'll try to sell it and recoup some of my money. So far I not happy with my purchase. I hope I can get some use out it so it will not be a total bust.
