Description: Description: This class is meant to introduce the woodturner to the art of ring turning. In this class we will discuss the tools needed to turn rings, various chucking and sizing techniques, finishing techniques, and we will explore a few of the many decorating options. Students should bring suitable eye protection such as safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield. If you have any sawdust sensitivities a respirator or dust mask would be advisable. Also bring any wood turning tools you might have. Tools and safety gear will be provided for those who don't own them. Enough materials for completing 2 rings will be provided. Please make sure you identify what ring size(s) you will need when signing up for the class. If you are unsure of your ring size note that the average size for men is 8.5 and women is 6. If you sign up in store there should be a ring size gauge available.

Description: This workshop is designed for those who have recently gotten a wood lathe, or have had one for a while, and haven't gotten around to using it until now. During this workshop students get acquainted with the wood lathe and its parts and accessories. We will cover the turning process, as well as sanding and applying finish to a project while it's on the lathe. Students will also be shown a variety of turning tools and how they function. You will also be introduced to wood selection, tool selection, and tool sharpening. Students will test their skills while working on a small turning project. Students should bring suitable eye protection such as safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield. If you have problems with wood dust, a respirator or dust mask would be advisable. Also bring any wood turning tools you might have. Tools and safety gear will be provided for those who don't own them. Materials for turning will be provided.

Sharpening Planes And Chisels with Bruce Helart

Tools Required: Plane Irons, Bench Chisels, Eye Protection

Description: We will make sharpening easier and eliminate all the mystery and confusion. Attendees will learn how to bring a blade to razor sharp quickly and consistently. In this three hour session we will discuss and compare the various sharpening methods including water stones, natural stones, sand paper, diamond plates and stropping. We will cover sharpening by hand with as well as various power sharpening tools and methods. We will also compare sharpening jigs and their use and setup. We will also discuss bevel angles for various tools and the benefits and trade-offs of these options. This will be a combination of discussion and hands on work. Much of the time will be dedicated to sharpening, Each student will have the opportunity to sharpen some of their own planes and chisels. I've been woodworking with hand tools for 30+ years and I've used with most every sharpening system out there. Sharpening is simple when the basics are understood and the process is repeatable and fast.

Description: Description: Any woodturner tends to suffer from "what to turn next?" and these classes are meant to give each student an opportunity to expand their project knowledge and abilities. Over the duration of the two days we will focus on each student turning a candle holder, a decorated turning top, a mouse (yes, a mouse!), a flower pot, a bird house, a mushroom box, a ring holder, and a goblet. Students should bring suitable eye protection such as safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield. If you have any sawdust sensitivities a respirator or dust mask would be advisable. Also bring any wood turning tools you might have. Enough materials for completing one of each project will be provided. Additional materials can be purchased with a 10% class discount on the same day as class.
